6-inch or 8-inch mini chainsaw: which one to buy
The best mini chainsaw is the one sized for the wood you actually cut. Bar length decides how thick a branch the saw takes in one pass, how it balances in your hand and how fast it drains a battery. Here is how to choose between a 6-inch and an 8-inch cordless mini chainsaw.

What bar length really means
The number on a mini chainsaw is the length of the guide bar, the steel plate the chain runs around. As a rule of thumb, a saw cuts wood up to about the length of its bar in a single pass. A 6-inch mini chainsaw is comfortable on limbs and logs up to roughly six inches; an 8-inch saw handles up to about eight. You can cut thicker wood by working from two sides, but it is slower and harder to keep the cut straight.
The bar also changes the feel of the tool. A shorter bar puts the weight close to your hand, so the saw is easy to steer between branches and close to a trunk. A longer bar reaches further but needs a steadier grip, especially overhead.
Choose a 6-inch mini chainsaw if…
- Most of your cutting is pruning, shrubs, roots and storm limbs
- You want the lightest, most compact saw for one-handed work
- You are new to chainsaws or buying for a senior or a gardener with weaker grip
- You cut kindling and fire-pit wood rather than stove-length logs
The Tietoc 6-inch saws weigh between 2.8 and 3.3 lb, run an 880 W copper motor at 28.6 ft/s and take a 6-inch log in about eight seconds. Because they draw less from the battery, a 2000mAh pack lasts roughly 30 to 40 minutes.
Choose an 8-inch mini chainsaw if…
- You regularly cut branches thicker than your wrist
- You buck small logs into rounds for a wood stove
- You clear young trees after a storm or a clearing job
- You are comfortable with a saw and want more reach
The 8-inch Tietoc saws still weigh around three pounds and cut an 8-inch log in about ten seconds. The longer chain draws more power, so pair the 8-inch bar with 4000mAh batteries if you plan long sessions.
Can't decide? Get both bars
The dual-bar kit ships with an 8-inch and a 6-inch bar and chain. Fit the 6-inch for tight pruning and switch to the 8-inch when the pile gets thicker; the change takes a few minutes with the included screwdriver. For limbs above your head, look at the 2-in-1 pole saw, which takes both bar sizes on a brushless motor and an extension pole.
Beyond the bar: what makes a good cordless mini chainsaw
Bar length is the first decision, but it is not the only one. Before you buy any cordless mini chainsaw, check these points:
- Weight: under about 3.5 lbs keeps the saw a one-handed tool; Tietoc saws weigh 2.8 to 3.3 lbs
- Motor and chain speed: a high-performance motor and a fast chain make cutting tasks quicker and more efficient
- Automatic oiling system: protects the chain and bar during operation, so you are not stopping to drip oil
- Safety design: a lock button, a splash guard, a non-slip handle and a clear manual
- Battery system: removable packs you can swap, plus spares sold separately
- Warranty and parts: a real warranty and replacement chains mean the saw can last years, not one season
Reviewers who have tested a lot of mini chainsaws make the same point: the little electric saws that people love and keep using are the compact, versatile ones with a design that makes them easy to handle, not just the ones with the biggest numbers on the box. Many buyers purchased one for a single storm clean-up and ended up using it for pruning, garden work and small trees every month.
Battery and kit matter as much as bar length
Two batteries are worth more than a bigger bar if you work for more than half an hour at a time. Swapping packs keeps the saw running while the first one charges. Look at what else is in the box, too: spare chains and guide plates, gloves and goggles, and a hard case all add value over time. And if you already own Tietoc 21V batteries, the tool-only saws are the cheapest way to add a second bar length.
